GEOCARBON is implemented through the following 8 complementary components (CMPs – Fig1), divided in one or more work-packages.

 CMP1– Collecting, harmonizing and synthesizing global carbon observations.

 CMP2 – Integrating global carbon observations into improved carbon cycle data assimilation systems.

 CMP3 – Establishing the requirements for an integrated global carbon observing system and assessing its performance.

 CMP4 – Developing a tropical carbon cycle observatory for Amazon and Africa.

 CMP5 – Delivering global and regional carbon budgets annually, including their uncertainty

 CMP6 – Improving the analysis of CH4 sources and sinks over the last decade and preparing for future monitoring.

 CMP7 – Assessing the economic value of an enhanced global carbon observation system, to estimate the cost and emissions savings.

 CMP8 – Disseminating the project results, linking with GEO and producing policy relevant information.

CMP1 collects and harmonizes the available data streams, to be synthesized and analysed in CMP1 and ingested in the carbon cycle data assimilation systems developed by CMP2. The optimal monitoring network is designed by CMP3. CMP4 focuses on the carbon budget of tropics (Amazon and Africa). CMP5 provides annual global and regional C-budgets, including sources and sinks. CMP6 addresses the CH4 component of the global C-cycle. CMP7 assesses the economic value of an enhanced global carbon observation system. CMP8 links the project with GEO, the European Commission, decision makers and any other potential stakeholder.
